Oden Ridge AL – A sheriff's deputy rode to the rescue, lariat in hand, when a bull got loose and ran over a 75-year-old man who was trying to shoo it out of his yard.
Morgan County chief deputy Mike Corley was summoned Sunday morning when the bull tore through a fence and began causing havoc while its owner, Mickey Randall, was in Florida.
Willie Morris was treated at the scene after the 850-pound bull ran over him in his yard. The bull had spent an hour on the loose before deputies prepared to put it down.
"They couldn't do anything to get control of him, so the deputy called me to let me know that they may have to shoot this bull," Corley told The Decatur Daily in a story Tuesday. "I told them unless he was definite threat, to stay clear of him and watch the traffic and wait for me to get up there."
Corley roped the bull with a lariat, tied the rope to the back of a log truck, then roped it with a second lariat and tied it to the other side of the truck. The chief deputy used another rope to pull the bull's legs from under him and haul it into a cattle trailer.
At the owner's request, the bull was put in a holding pen at a stockyard by neighbors on Monday.
"I was just thankful that we could save Mickey's bull and didn't have to shoot him," Corley said. "I just hate that it made me miss church."
