Knoxville TN – The Tennessee Valley Authority worked Monday to return an Alabama nuclear reactor to full power after a weekend outage caused by a faulty sensor.
The Unit 1 reactor at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant automatically shut down Friday after the sensor separated from a system that circulates water through the reactor.
In a report to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, TVA said an unknown amount of coolant system water leaked from the sensing line.
The federal utility said the incident presented no risk to plant employees or the public.
The reactor was reconnected to the electric grid Monday afternoon and was expected to increase power through the night.
The reactor was restarted in May after a five-year restoration. It had been idled since 1985.
