Hurricane Dean Appears in the Atlantic

By Associated Press

Gulf of Mexico – The first hurricane of the Atlantic season has formed. Hurricane Dean is moving toward the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.

Forecasters say it could close in on the islands by tomorrow.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said early today they were beginning to see an eye form at Dean's center.

In the Caribbean, hurricane warnings have been issued for the islands of Dominica and Saint Lucia by their local governments as Dean approaches.

The storm is centered about 485 miles east of Barbados and about 590 miles east of Martinique. Dean is moving west at 24 miles an hour, and is expected to continue the same path for the next 24 hours.
