Distance Learning Expands to 100 New High Schools

By Associated Press

Montgomery AL – Students at 100 more high schools across the state will be able to use distance learning technology this school year.

Superintendent of Education Joe Morton said he and Gov. Bob Riley will make a formal announcement of the expansion Thursday.

Riley launched the ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide) initiative in 2005. It began with a pilot program in 24 schools in Jan. 2006 and since then has expanded to 70 sites.

The program uses integrated technology to offer advanced level courses and electives that might not otherwise be available to students. Riley's goal is that every high school in the state will be an ACCESS site by 2010.

There will now be more than 20,000 students participating in the program.
