Truck Spill Prompts Highway Closure

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – A chemical spill on U.S. 31 near the entrance ramp to Highway 280 prompted authorities to shut down the roadway Tuesday. Police said a tractor trailer carrying ''pharmaceuticals'' overturned.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue, the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, Homewood Police and Hazmat units are at the scene working the accident.

Authorities have determined the chemical inside the truck is NOT hazardous. A Homewood policeman said when he arrived, he found a white powered substance. That's when Hazmat crews were called. There are no injuries.

Traffic is congested and police said the accident site should be cleaned up before the start of the afternoon rush hour.
