Congressman Everett Announces Retirement

By Associated Press

Washington, DC – Congressman Terry Everett says he will retire when his current term expires and will not run for re-election next year.

Everett is a Republican from Rehobeth in southeast Alabama. He was first elected in 1992 and is serving his eighth term in Congress.

Everett is former newspaper publisher and represents Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. The district covers much of southeast and central Alabama from Dothan to Montgomery.

The 70-year-old Everett cited health issues as being a reason for his retirement. He says he has suffered some nerve damage in his right foot because of recent bouts with shingles.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Mike Hubbard says he was surprised by Everett's decision to retire. He predicted there will be a crowded field of candidates next year seeking to replace Everett.
