Democrat Urges Sessions to Avoid Siegelman Hearings

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – A state Democratic Party official has urged Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions to disqualify himself from any Senate Judiciary Committee hearings into the prosecution of former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman.
A Sessions aide dismissed the statement from Democratic Party Executive Director Jim Spearman as ''party politics.''

Spearman said Sessions should not participate because of statements the senator made questioning the need for such hearings and a Time magazine report that a key witness against Siegelman also told of possibly illegal contributions to a Sessions campaign.

A House Judiciary Committee hearing scheduled for Thursday into whether the U.S. Justice Department selectively prosecuted Democrats, including Siegelman, has been postponed because of the funeral of Virginia Republican Congressman Jo Ann Davis, who died Saturday.
