Anniston Passes Resolution Against Racism

By Associated Press

Anniston, AL – Anniston city leaders passed a resolution this week condemning racism and offering assistance with the investigation of a noose found hanging on a utility pole at the Anniston Army Depot.

A military spokeswoman said Wednesday the city's offer is appreciated but there is nothing local officials could do to help.

Joan Gustafson said the military continues to investigate the incident. No motive or suspects have been identified.

The Anniston City Council approved the resolution Monday. Member Ben Little said he hoped the vote would ''raise the consciousness'' of the public.

A rope that the military initially described as a noose was found tied to a pole near a building on October 2nd. In an interview, Gustafson said the rope was more like a slipknot than a noose, with fewer loops than a classic hangman's noose.

The Anniston depot maintains and repairs equipment for the Army.
