Atlanta GA – David Paxton, president and chief executive officer of Paxton Media Group in Paducah, Ky., was elected president of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association during the group's annual convention Monday at The Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
Paxton succeeds Ivan V. "Andy" Anderson Jr., president and chief executive office of the Evening Post Publishing Co. of Charleston, S.C., who was elected chairman of the Atlanta-based group's Board of Directors.
Donna Barrett, president and chief executive office of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., was elected president-elect. Steve Brandt, president and publisher of The Greenville (S.C.) News, was elected treasurer.
The publishers' association also elected five directors to three-year terms on its board, which includes one director from each of 14 states and four at-large directors serving staggered terms.
Board members elected Monday were:
Nat Lea, general manager of The Sentinel-Record in Hot Springs, Ark. Lea succeeded Sherm Frederick, president of Stephens Media LLC, as the Arkansas representative.
Mary Jacobus, president and chief operating officer of the New York Times Regional Media Group in Tampa, Fla., who joined the board one year ago to complete the unexpired term of Steve Ainsley who had moved to The Boston Globe. Jacobus was elected to a full three-year term as the Florida board member.
Scott Schurz, editor and publisher of The Advocate-Messenger of Danville, Ky. Schurz succeeded Taylor Hayes, publisher and chief executive officer of the Kentucky New Era in Hopkinsville as the Kentucky director.
- Bruce Hartmann, president and publisher of The Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel, who had completed the last two years of the unexpired term of John Wilcox after Wilcox left the Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal and the SNPA board. Hartman was elected to his first full three-year term as an at-large representative.
Steve Hills, president and general manager of The Washington Post, who was elected to a second term as an at-large director.
On Sunday, the SNPA Board of Directors elected three trustees to the SNPA Foundation Board of Trustees. Elected to three-year terms were: Brian Cooper, executive vice president of Cox Newspapers in Atlanta; Victor H. Hanson III, president and publisher of The Birmingham (Ala.) News; and Doug Toney, editor and publisher of The Herald-Zeitung in New Braunfels, Texas.
Hayes was elected to complete the remaining two years of John Fish's term on the foundation board. Fish left the board after leaving the Naples (Fla.) Daily News to become a consultant.
The SNPA Foundation Board re-elected Walter E. Hussman Jr., publisher of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, Ark., as its chairman and Derek Dunn-Rankin, president of Sun Coast Media Group, Charlotte Harbor, Fla., as vice chairman. Jonathan Segal, president of Freedom Newspapers, Inc., was elected treasurer.
