Veteran's Home Resident Found Along Highway

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – A health department report says a resident of a Bay Minette veteran's home left the home without the staff's knowledge and was found in a wheelchair alongside a busy four-lane highway.

The report on the William F. Green State Veterans Home was released Thursday and comes on the heels of earlier health department reports of other problems at the home.

Bureau of Health Provider Standards director Rick Harris said this additional finding indicates serious problems at the home.

Kimberly Justice, Veterans Home Coordinator for the state VA department, said the department had received the report and was reading through it.

She added that South Carolina-based HMR Governmental Services, Inc., the health care provider at the Bay Minette home, is preparing a plan to fix problems.

An August health department report on the home cited numerous problems, most seriously that staff failed to follow proper procedures after patients fell.
