Small Town, Big Jewelry Heist

By Associated Press

Butler AL – A burglary at a small-town store has left investigators with a big-time mystery: Who stole nearly $600,000 worth of jewelry and apparently got away without leaving any solid clues?

Butler police said yesterday they have few leads despite the $10,000 reward that's being offered for information about the theft of hundreds of items from Village Jewelry and Sports.

Jay Jimerson, who helps run the family-owned business, said the missing loot included as many as 400 diamond rings, up to 300 necklaces and about 100 bracelets.

The heist, which occurred the weekend after Thanksgiving, was first reported by The Choctaw-Sun Advocate newspaper.

Police Chief Chuch Breland called it the biggest theft in more than 25 years for the rural county, located along the Mississippi line.

The Choctaw County Sheriff's Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.
