Police Say Huntsville, Birmingham Men Among Two Killed at Drag Race

Birmingham – A man from Huntsville and another from Birmingham were killed at an illegal street race over the weekend in the Pratt community.

The Jefferson County coroner's office said 29-year-old Lonnie King of Birmingham died after being struck by one of two cars racing about 4:30 p.m. Sunday as a large crowd watched. King was reportedly videotaping the race when the collision occurred.

Authorities said 36-year-old Anthony Lett of Huntsville was shot after the crash and died at UAB Hospital. Police said Lett may have been gunned down in a dispute over a racing bet.

One of the race drivers was taken into custody, but no formal charges were filed.

A video of what appeared to be the deadly crash was posted on the YouTube Web site, but the title suggests the race occurred on a street other than the one where the crash actually happened. YouTube includes many videos of what appear to be illegal drag races.
