Birmingham – There are some Alabama taxpayers finding out they cannot file their taxes just yet. The Internal Revenue Service said the delay is all tied to the Alternative Minimum Tax extension approved at the last minute by Congress.
IRS spokesman Dan Boone in Birmingham said individuals affected are those claiming education credits, residential energy credits, the mortgage interest credit or the credit for child and dependent care expenses while using Form 1040A, Schedule 2.
Boone said if you file too early electronically, you will be told the return can't be processed. He said if you a file a paper return, the IRS will just hold the return until it can be run through the system.
