Little to No Change in Drought Status

Birmingham – The U.S. Drought Monitor is out with its latest survey, and the news isn't good.

The survey, released today, found little or no change in areas around the Southeast affected by the worst drought conditions. Meteorologists say despite recent rains and a rare snowfall last week, conditions remain unchanged.

According to the Drought Monitor, 20 percent of the Southeast remains under D-4 drought conditions - the worst on the scale.

The D-4 designation affects 39 percent of Alabama, that's just less than a one percent increase from last week. In Georgia, it's 16 percent, 19 percent of South Carolina, 46 percent of North Carolina and 18 percent of Tennessee.

Forecasters say there are no signs the drought will loosen its grip between now and summer. Many part of the region are already as much as half-foot below normal rainfall so far this year.
