Montgomery – A Tuscaloosa construction company facing the forfeiture of millions in a federal investigation into the state's two-year college system says the government's case contains false statements including a mistaken identity.
G. Douglas Jones is representing Hall-Taylor Construction, which was named in court documents in connection to a fraud and bribery scheme involving former two-year Chancellor Roy Johnson.
Prosecutors say the company received about $4.43 million from the two-year system from July 2002 to July 2006.
The company filed a request for an emergency hearing Wednesday and a motion to dismiss and quash a multimillion seizure warrant.
One of the claims being disputed by the company is $4,000 the government alleges was paid to Johnson's son, Steve, in exchange for business from the Department of Postsecondary Education.
But the construction company says it made payments to another Steve Johnson who owns and operates an outdoor cleaning company.
U.S. Attorney Alice Martin and an attorney for Roy Johnson could not immediately be reached for comment tonight.
