Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham Board of Education voted unanimously in a closed-door meeting Tuesday evening to fire city schools Superintendent Stan Mims without severance pay.
Board members last week received an investigation report saying that Mims intentionally deleted 4 1/2 pages of critical findings from a report on the system before distributing it to the public.
Mims has acknowledged altering the report by the Council of Great City Schools, a Washington-based think tank. He said he didn't want to demoralize staff members. The altered version was distributed with renumbered pages to members of the public and the media in January.
School board members received the entire report, which was also posted on the Council of the Great City Schools' Web site.
Mims took over as superintendent for Birmingham city schools in June 2006. He was placed on administrative leave last month.
Some board members have also criticized Mims, saying he has been unprepared for important meetings and failed to provide adequate information for his job evaluation.
