Slain Officer Awarded State's Highest Law Enforcement Honor

Huntsville, AL – A slain Huntsville police officer has been awarded the state's highest law enforcement honor. The family of Officer William Eric Freeman will receive the Legislative Medal of Honor in a ceremony Thursday, The Huntsville Times reported Wednesday.

Freeman's wife, Leslie, will accept the medal along with the command staff of the Huntsville Police Department.

The 36-year-old Freeman was shot in the head in December while responding to a traffic accident. He died the next morning.

The Legislative Medal of Honor is given annually to an officer whose actions have been deemed ``outstanding or courageous'' by the State Legislature.
