Montgomery AL – A proposed constitutional amendment to remove the state sales tax from groceries has cleared another legislative hurdle.
The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve the proposed amenmdent, which passed the House earlier.
It would remove the state's 4 perent sales tax on groceries and replace the lost revenue by eliminating the state income tax deduction for federal taxes paid. The measure now goes to the full Senate, which is currently bogged down in a debate over gambling.
