AG King Criticizes Justice Department in Election Probe

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's attorney general says the U.S. Department of Justice has become an obstacle to investigating allegations of voter fraud in Perry County.

Attorney General Troy King says he has been seeking the reports that Justice Department election monitors filed after observing the primary election June 3 in the west Alabama county. But King says the Justice Department required him to file a request under the Freedom of Information Act to get the reports. So far, they have not been provided.

The Republican attorney general held a news conference Monday in Montgomery, where he said the Justice Department's lack of cooperation could lead to more problems in the primary runoff July 15.

King's office has subpoenaed primary election records from Perry, Bullock and Lowndes counties. It also has three people under indictment in Hale County from elections in 2004 and 2005.
