2-Year System To Get Scandal Restitution

Montgomery, AL – The two-year college system no longer needs to worry about filing a lawsuit to recoup money from a widespread scandal that mined funds from its colleges.

Chancellor Bradley Byrne told state school board members Thursday that prosecutors have agreed to name the system as the recipient of any restitution that's ordered in the case.

Attorney General Troy King had planned to file a lawsuit on the system's behalf that would take money recovered from the defendants and put it into a state education fund.

Byrne said the change is beneficial because it puts the money directly back into the system and saves time and expenses by avoiding a court case.

The system's loses include $18 million ordered repaid by fired chancellor Roy Johnson.
