ThyssenKrupp May Need Mass Transit In Mobile

Mobile, AL – A mass transit system may be needed during construction of the ThyssenKrupp AG steel plant north of Mobile.

Daily traffic on U.S. 43 could more than double if all the workers drive their own cars.

Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, who represents the U.S. 43 corridor, thinks some kind of transit system is going to have to be in place soon. At the peak of construction, ThyssenKrupp spokesman Scott Posey said up to 7,000 workers are expected at the site each day.

Posey said the company expect to meet the majority of parking needs on site, but contractors will have to develop their own transportation systems.

ThyssenKrupp already has about 700 construction workers on site now. The $3.7 billion plant is expected to begin operations late next year.
