Gaming May Help Pay Jefferson Co. Debt

Birmingham, AL – Jefferson County officials are expected to consider countywide gaming as an option to raise money for the county's $3.2 billion sewer debt.

It's among a series of proposals the County Commission is expected to receive from a new set of financial advisers to avert bankruptcy.

Commissioner Jim Carns said electronic bingo has been mentioned as part of a new plan.

The commission will vote Tuesday whether to hire a new negotiating team to represent the county in talks with Wall Street banks and creditors on ways to restructure its debt and pay interest costs that have grown to $23 million a month.

Commission President Bettye Fine Collins said it's too early to determine what direction the county will take.
