Birmingham, AL – Birmingham officials have called for a crackdown on those who violate the city's youth curfew.
Mayor Larry Langford on Tuesday called for fines starting at $500 for a first offense, with violators taken straight to jail. City Council President Carole Smitherman called for police to also haul parents to jail when their children violate curfew or are charged with other crimes.
The call for a crackdown comes three days after a 16-year-old was arrested in connection with a 3:30 a.m. double homicide outside a Five Points South nightclub. Pierre Smith has been charged with capital murder in the deaths of two 20-year-old men shot Saturday morning in a parking lot behind Banana Joe's bar on the city's Southside.
