Future Concern for Birmingham Water

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – The manager of Alabama's largest water system says that in less than 20 years Birmingham will not have enough water to meet demand.

Birmingham Water Works General Manager Mac Underwood spoke before the joint House-Senate Committee on Water Policy and Management Monday. The committee is trying to come up with a long-term water policy for the state.

Underwood told the committee about steps Birmingham took in 2006 and 2007 to limit water use during times of drought. But he said that, with continued growth, the system would run out of water by 2025.

During Monday's public meeting, the legislative committee heard from water and navigation experts, agricultural industry leaders and utility providers.
