Ala. Two-Year Colleges Closing Shelters

Montgomery, AL – The last of the hurricane evacuation shelters at Alabama's two-year colleges are closing.

The shelters have been housing about 5,000 people from Louisiana who arrived by bus. About 200 buses for the return trip started leaving the shelters early Friday morning. Community college Chancellor Bradley Byrne says all the shelters should be closed by early afternoon.

Byrne says he's proud that 28 community colleges across the state were able to help the evacuees.

Besides the 5,000 evacuees who arrived by bus, the community college shelters housed another 1,500 evacuees who arrived on their own. Many of those people had already departed.
