Ala. Board of Education Discussing Citizens Only Admissions Policy

Montgomery, AL – The State Board of Education has started discussions on a policy change that would keep people without proof of U.S. citizenship from being admitted to Alabama's community colleges.

Two-year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne said if passed, Alabama will become one of three states with such a policy. Byrne said a policy is needed to ensure funds are being spent effectively.

The board discussed the possible change at its work session Thursday and will vote on it at their meeting Sept. 25.

If passed without any changes, the policy would take effect for applicants in spring 2009 but won't affect any students who are admitted before then.
