Mobile, AL – The American Civil Liberties Union has accused Alabama's largest school system of illegal discrimination for allowing classes to be segregated by gender at a Mobile County middle school.
In a letter to school officials, the ACLU said Wednesday the student body at Hankins Middle School was segregated by gender without notifying parents and that no coeducational option was provided.
Mobile County schools spokeswoman Nancy Pierce said the system's lawyers are reviewing the ACLU letter, but declined further comment.
The ACLU said other public school systems are experimenting with classes that segregate by gender, but no exact number was available.
