GOP Group Wants Party Stalwart Removed

Birmingham, AL – A group for young Republicans is trying to oust Jefferson County Commission President Bettye Fine Collins from the Alabama GOP.

The Greater Birmingham Young Republicans said Friday it passed a resolution seeking Collins' resignation from the party. That's because she stripped two fellow Republicans of power in her job as president of the commission.

Two other local Republican groups also have criticized Collins. She replaced fellow GOP commissioners Jim Carns and Bobby Humphryes with Democrats in leadership positions on the commission.

Collins did not immediately return a message seeking comment. But she previously defended her role in a realignment of the five-member commission.
