Anniston Lands on Civil Rights Heritage Trail

By Associated Press

Anniston, AL – Anniston will be a stop on the state's Civil Rights Heritage Trail.

The site on Alabama 202 where a mob beat Freedom Riders and torched their Greyhound bus on Mother's Day 1961 will be a part of the trail developed by Auburn University and the state Department of Tourism. Riders were traveling that day to test a U.S. Supreme Court decision outlawing segregation in interstate transportation.

Spirit of Anniston director Betsy Bean will ask the city council about setting up a panel to create a memorial, possibly using photos or sculptures. She says the civil rights heritage needs to be acknowledged.

Mayor Gene Robinson says a museum dedicated to the city's black history, including civil rights, could be another attraction for visitors.
