Tuscaloosa, AL – Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person elected to a public office in California. His life came to an end 30 years ago this week, when he and Mayor George Moscone were shot and killed inside San Francisco's city hall.

His life and work had a big impact on Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham), who, nearly three decades after Milk's death, became the first openly gay person elected to the Alabama Legislature. APR's Brandon Hollingsworth talks with Todd about what Milk's life meant in 1978, and what it means today.
