Montgomery, AL – The day after Christmas won't be an extra holiday for state workers.
Alabama governors have sometimes given state employees an extra day off around Christmas. Riley gave state employees off on Christmas Eve last year so they would have a four-day weekend, but he's not planning to grant a holiday for Friday, Dec. 26 this year.
Riley's communications director, Jeff Emerson, said Tuesday that giving an extra holiday would require the state to pay overtime for corrections, mental health and law enforcement employees who have to work that day. He said that would cost state government an extra $3 million during a time when the state needs to limit spending.
