Montgomery, AL – U.S. Rep. Artur Davis says any economic stimulus package approved by the new Congress in January should include an extension of tax breaks that help low-income areas.
Davis joined several officials from west Alabama on Thursday at the state Capitol to urge extension of the federal Renewal Community and Empowerment Zone legislation.
The legislation provides tax breaks to businesses that locate in low-income areas, but it is scheduled to expire at the end of 2009. Davis said the tax breaks need to be extended soon because businesses make their decisions about locating or expanding plants a year in advance. Davis said the legislation also needs to rewritten to make it easier for businesses in low-income areas to qualify for the tax breaks.
