Ala. Space Museum Lacks $42M For Retired Shuttle

Huntsville, AL – Officials at Alabama's rocket museum in Huntsville would love to have a space shuttle once NASA retires the fleet in a few years. But they don't have $42 million to spend on a used spacecraft.

A spokesman said Thursday that it's unlikely the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will enter the bidding for a space shuttle once they stop flying.

NASA says it will ask $42 million for each of the three shuttles after they are retired. But Space Center spokesman Al Whitaker said the museum doesn't have that kind of money and wouldn't be able to raise that much in donations.

Whitaker said the museum hopes NASA changes its mind about selling the shuttles or drops the price.
