Ala. Lawmaker Wants New Leaders For House Panels

Montgomery, AL – A veteran lawmaker says he's tired of seeing the same old faces leading committee meetings in the Alabama House of Representatives.

State Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery has asked House Speaker Seth Hammett to rotate committee chair positions before the start of the 2009 regular session on Feb. 3. Hammett is currently serving his third four-year term as speaker and most committees have had the same chairs through much of that time.

Holmes said in a letter to the speaker that there are others in the House who deserve a chance to lead the committees.

Hammett declined to comment on Holmes' request.

Holmes is a Democrat serving his ninth term. He's called the ``dean of the House'' because he is the longest serving member.
