ADEM Could Order Fine Against Anniston Incinerator

By Associated Press

Anniston, AL – The chemical weapons incinerator in Anniston could be fined $61,500 for nine violations, according to a proposed consent order by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

Tim Garrett, site manager at the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility, said the violations were self-reported as part of routine checks.

ADEM spokesman Jerome Hand said Wednesday that the public was not at risk due to the violations, which were mostly procedural.

Hand said the orders' purpose is to resolve the violations and that the order is not final.

The chemical weapons disposal program has been fined twice in about five years. The first was initially set at $10,000 but brought down to $2,500 in exchange for work the facility did in the community. The second was a $50,000 fine for "procedural" issues.
