Ala. Gov. Sets Dates For Senate Election

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has set the special election dates to fill the state Senate District 22 seat held by the late Pat Lindsey of Butler.

Riley set a deadline of Feb. 17 for candidates to qualify. The party primaries will be April 14. If a runoff is necessary, it will be on June 2 and the general election on July 21. If no runoff is necessary, the general election will be on June 2.

The dates set by Riley won't allow the seat to be filled before the Legislature's regular session ends in mid-May. A spokesman for the governor said Riley had to comply with requirements set by the Justice Department, which mandate time for military personnel overseas to cast absentee ballots.

Lindsey died Jan. 11 of an apparent heart attack. His district in southwest Alabama includes all of Escambia and Washington counties and parts of Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Mobile and Monroe counties.
