House to Debate Grocery Tax Removal

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Alabama legislators are set to debate proposed legislation that would remove the state's four percent sales tax from the purchase of groceries.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. John Knight of Montgomery is the first item scheduled for debate on the work agenda in the House for Tuesday. The bill is supported by Democrats in the House, the black caucus and advocacy groups for low income residents.

The bill would replace the lost income by removing the current deduction for federal income taxes paid from some taxpayers.

Republicans have mostly opposed the bill, saying it would cause some Alabama residents to pay higher taxes.
