Ala. Home To At Least 85,000 Illegal Immigrants

Birmingham, AL – A new report says Alabama is home to between 85,000 and 120,000 illegal immigrants.

The study was released Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center. It's an attempt to count a group of people who are hard to document and move frequently, making it difficult to get a more exact population estimate.

The report estimates that Alabama's illegal immigrant population has more than doubled from about 40,000 in 2005. Two decades ago, an estimated 5,000 illegal immigrants lived in the state.

The numbers for Alabama may sound large, but the report says other Southern states including Florida, Georgia and North Carolina have far greater numbers of illegal immigrants.
