Montgomery, AL – An Alabama Senate committee has sent a message to the sponsor of legislation that would ban text messaging while driving: Put it in park!
The Senate Judiciary Committee delayed action Wednesday on a bill by Republican Rep. Jim McClendon of Springville. McClendon says he's trying to make the highways safer because text messaging distracts drivers. The House passed McClendon's bill overwhelmingly in February. But members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said they had concerns.
The committee's chairman, Democratic Sen. Myron Penn of Union Springs, says he wouldn't want to ban a parent from getting an important text message about a sick child. Penn says McClendon's bill will have a difficult time passing the Senate.
