Confederate Memorial Day Observed In Ala.

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama state holiday for Confederate Memorial Day was observed by about 120 people who gathered around the Confederate Monument at the state Capitol.

The Alabama Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Robert Reames of Birmingham, said the observance Monday had nothing to do with race or hate. He said it was an opportunity to remember ancestors.

Participants came dressed in everything from hoop skirts and sun bonnets to modern-day motorcycle jackets. They sang ``Dixie'' and called out the names of relatives who fought for the Confederacy.
