Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Legislature has voted to stiffen penalties for violations at the Port of Mobile.
The Senate passed a bill Wednesday by Democratic Rep. Yvonne Kennedy of Mobile that increases fines for violations of Alabama State Port Authority regulations from $500 to $5,000 and potential jail time from six months to one year.
The bill also makes it an offense to keep a ship liable to sink or pollute the harbor anchored in the port after an order from the Alabama State Port Authority to move it.
The bill passed the House earlier and now goes to the governor for signing into law.
