Montgomery, AL – A proposed constitutional amendment to bail out Alabama's prepaid college tuition program will be up for a final vote on the Legislature's last meeting day Friday.
The Senate Finance and Taxation-General Fund Committee voted unanimously Thursday for a constitutional amendment that has already passed the House. The legislation by Democratic Rep. Craig Ford of Gadsden would borrow $150 million from a state savings account to help pay tuition for the 48,000 participants in the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Plan.
Ford's legislation goes to the Senate on Friday.
State Treasurer Kay Ivey, who oversees the tuition plan, says she's concerned the proposed constitutional amendment won't be on the statewide ballot until June 2010 and there is no backup if it fails.
