Birmingham, AL – A 23-year-old soldier from west Jefferson County has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.

The family of Army Sgt. Carlie Lee III was notified of his death Monday.

The Department of Defense said Lee, a native of the Sandusky community, was killed Friday when his patrol was attacked by enemy forces. A fellow soldier from his unit was also killed in the firefight.

Lee was a member of 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York.

Lee joined the military in 2006 and was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
