Five Officers Fired For Videotaped Beating Of Suspect

Birmingham, AL – Five Birmingham police officers have been fired for beating an unconscious suspect with fists, feet and a billy club after a roadway chase.

The beating was caught on videotape by a camera mounted on a police car.

Police spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams said Wednesday that the officers have been fired. The officers have not been identified. They can appeal their firings to the Jefferson County Personnel Board.

Authorities believe the video has been seen by numerous Birmingham officers and as many as a half-dozen supervisors over the past year. It was taken in January 2008 after a high-speed chase by several area law enforcement agencies ended when the suspect's van flipped over.

Investigators say the suspect, Anthony Warren, didn't know he had been beaten.
