Prepaid College Tuition Board Meets Today

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The board of Alabama's prepaid college tuition plan is meeting to try to figure out what to do about the program's financial problems.

The board of the Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Plan meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Montgomery. Parents of students participating in the program say they are planning to attend in large numbers. One of the parents, Patti Lambert of Decatur, says they are seeking assurances that the program will continue.

The program's assets have plunged in value and it now has about half the money it needs to meet its future tuition obligations for the 48,000 participants.

The Legislature ended its 2009 session Friday without providing a financial bailout, but it did ask the state pension fund conduct a detailed study of the program.
