Ala. Enacts Catfish, Seafood Labeling

Montgomery, AL – Restaurants in Alabama are going to have to start disclosing the country of origin of their catfish and and seafood.

Gov. Bob Riley says he has signed catfish and seafood labeling bills passed by the Legislature. Riley says people want to know where their food comes from.

The catish law provides for notice on a sign or on the menu when the catfish is foreign. The seafood law provides for notice on a sign or menu that customers have the right to know the origin. The catfish labeling law takes effect in August and the seafood law in January.

Larry Fidel of the Alabama Restaurant Assocation says some large chain restaurants will have a hard time complying because their seafood is a mix of domestic and imported.
