UAB Medical Center Says Its Eliminating 245 Jobs

Birmingham, AL – The University of Alabama at Birmingham says it is eliminating 245 jobs.

UAB Health System CEO Will Ferniany said Tuesday the cuts follow a review under the university's Bridge to the Future plan. UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands and the UAB Health System in Birmingham said they are eliminating 164 positions and shifting 81 workers into jobs now held under contracts for non-patient care support services.

The cuts come after a productivity performance review under the Bridge to the Future plan initiated last fall by Ferniany.

He said the plan's goal is to ensure that UAB is positioned to meet health care delivery, educational and financial demands while providing the highest quality of care.

Workers whose positions are eliminated will receive severance packages.
