Hank Sanders Won't Seek Reelection To Senate

Montgomery, AL – State Sen. Hank Sanders of Selma says he will retire after serving seven terms in the Alabama Senate.

The 66-year-old Sanders is one of the most prominent black political figures in the state. A Harvard-educated lawyer, he was a founder of the Alabama New South Coalition and is one of the longest serving members of the Senate.

A Decmocrat, he is chairman of the powerful Senate committee that prepares the state education budget.

A longtime civil rights attorney in Selma, Sanders released a statement Thursday saying he would not run for re-election next year. It was first reported by The Selma Times-Journal and television station WSFA in Montgomery.
