Birmingham, AL – Alabama environmental officials say the Tennessee Valley Authority plans to ship millions of tons of coal ash from a massive spill in Tennessee to a giant landfill in one of Alabama's poorest counties for disposal.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management said Friday the federal utility has sent notification that it plans to send some 3 million cubic yards of coal ash to Arrowhead Landfill in Perry County.
TVA previously sent a test shipment of 15 railcars full of the ash to Perry County. The utility says it can't confirm whether more shipments are on the way.
A dike broke outside a coal-fired power plant in eastern Tennessee in December, sending tons of coal ash and sludge into a neighborhood and nearby waters.
