Perry County, AL – An environmental group says more coal ash waste and hazardous materials could be coming to Alabama landfills from out of state.
The Conservation Alabama Foundation said Alabama's 32 municipal landfills can accept more than 51,000 tons of waste daily. But the state only produces about 12,600 tons of waste each day, giving it excess landfill capacity.
The executive director of the group, Adam Snyder, said in a statement Tuesday that makes Alabama a "prime target" for out-of-state waste.
The Tennessee Valley Authority informed the state last week that it plans to send millions of tons of coal ash to a landfill in Perry County as it cleans up a massive spill in Tennessee.
